지난달 31일(현지 시각) 미 경제매체 비즈니스인사이더에 따르면 한국은 전년 대비 2단계 상승했다. US뉴스&월드리포트는 “첨단 기술 및 서비스 기반 경제”에 주목하면서 “국민총저축이 세계 최대이고, 외국인 투자 규모 역시 크다”고 말했다.
US뉴스&월드리포트는 1만7000명을 대상으로 전세계 85개국에 대한 설문조사를 실시해 25개 강대국을 발표한다. 해당 국가의 정치, 경제, 군사력 등이 포함된 순위로 1위는 미국이 유지했다. US뉴스&월드리포트는 미국은 “세계에서 경제 및 군사력이 가장 높은 나라”라며 “전 세계에 음악, 영화 등 대중문화를 퍼뜨리고 있다”고 말했다.
2위는 중국이 차지했다. 중국의 경제 규모와 인구가 강대국 2위를 유지하게 한 비결이다. 3위는 러시아다. US뉴스&월드리포트는 “우크라이나 침공으로 서방의 제재를 받고 있지만, 토지면적이 세계에서 가장 큰 국가”이라며 “석유와 가스 생산 덕분에 세계 최대 경제국 중 하나”라고 평가했다.
7위는 프랑스, 8위는 일본, 9위는 아랍에미리트, 10위는 이스라엘이 차지했다. 지난해 33위였던 우크라이나는 러시아의 침공으로 인해 14위로 상승했다. US뉴스&월드리포트는 “서비스, 산업, 농업은 우크라이나의 3대 경제”라며 “미국은 물론 EU와 북대서양조약기구(NATO) 등으로부터 막대한 정치적, 군사적 지원을 받고 있다”고 말했다.

South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is a nation in eastern Asia that occupies the southern portion of the Korean Peninsula and has a long history of conflict.
Liberated from Japan in 1945 at the end of World War II, South Korea was invaded by communist forces in North Korea several years later. Aid from the United Nations helped end the three-year war and support the south on its path to democracy. A critical divide between the two nations along the center of the peninsula remains.
Establishing true democracy proved to be a challenge in South Korea. Though the first general democratic election in the country was held in 1948, subsequent periods were punctuated by authoritarian rule and military coups. Since 1987, however, the country has consistently held direct presidential elections.
South Korea’s high-tech, service-based economy is a foreign investment success story, becoming the first recipient of OECD Development Assistance Committee funds to later become a donor of the funds. The nation has seen steady growth and poverty reduction since the 1960s and is now among the world’s largest economies overall.
The country’s capital, Seoul, is located near the center of the Korean Peninsula, chosen as such during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1897) for its impressive feng shui – the idea that the positioning of objects ensures health and harmony. It is home to the headquarters of Samsung, Hyundai and Kia, representing two of South Korea’s important exports: technology and cars.
South Korea has one of the world’s largest gross national savings and reserves of foreign investment. Disposable household income has increased in recent years, and the country’s large upper class is keen to spend their money on “brand name” items and products.
South Korea’s culture is rooted heavily in the humanist ideology of Confucianism. Today, Christianity is the prominent religion with Buddhism as a close second. South Korea faces the challenge of an aging population. Residents are afforded universal health care and mandatory education through middle school.
