BMI formula

Body Mass Index (BMI) = weight (lb) * 703 / height (inch) /height (inch) 

                        (e.g.   153 (lb) * 703 / 68 / 68 = 23.26 )

 

or

 

BMI = weight (kg) / height (meter) / height (meter)

     (e.g.   69 (kg) /1.73 / 1.73 = 23.05 )

 

  • At the same BMI, women tend to have more body fat than men.
  • At the same BMI, older people, on average, tend to have more body fat than younger adults.
  • Highly trained athletes may have a high BMI because of increased muscularity rather than increased body fatness.

    Japanese definition

    Normal:18.5 - 22.9

    Overweight: 23 - 24.9

    Obese: 25 and above

     

    Singapore definition

    Normal:18.5 - 22.9

    Overweight: 23 - 27.5

    Obese: 27.6 and above
