뉴욕에 있는 구글본사에서 30대 소프트웨어 엔지니어가 투신해 사망했다고 뉴욕포스트가 5일(현지시간) 보도했다.

이름이 공개되지 않은 31세의 구글 선임 소프트웨어 엔지니어는 지난 4일 오후 11시30분경 구글 본사 인근의 도로에서 의식을 잃은 채 발견됐다. 행인의 신고를 받고 출동한 경찰과 소방당국은 환자를 급히 인근 병원으로 후송했지만 그는 결국 숨졌다.

 

뉴욕경찰은 그가 14층에서 몸을 던진 것으로 보고 있다. 경찰은 구글 건물의 14층 야외테라스 난간에서 숨진 엔지니어의 손자국을 발견했다.

 

경찰은 사망한 엔지니어의 유서나 메모는 아직 발견되지 않았다고 밝혔다.

 

그가 투신에 이르게된 경위는 아직 밝혀지지 않고 있지만 구글의 대규모 감원과 관련이 있는 것 아니냐는 해석이 나오고 있다. 지난 2월에도 구글 뉴욕본사에서 근무하던 33세의 직원이 목을 매 스스로 목숨을 끊은 일이 있었다.

A 31-year-0ld senior software engineer has died after falling from the 14th floor of Google's New York City office building, the New York Post first reported.

 

The police responded to a 911 call around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, reporting an unconscious person lying on the ground at 111 Eighth Avenue on West 15th Street in Manhattan, the New York Police Department confirmed to Insider.

 

The name of the engineer hasn't been released pending family notification, the NYPD said. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

 

"We are very saddened by this tragic incident involving one of our employees," Google Communications Manager Alex Joseph told Insider in a statement, noting that the company has provided on-site grief counselors for staffers on Friday and will continue to do so over the next several days.

 

Joseph continued: "Our thoughts are with their family, and out of respect for them and their privacy, we aren't commenting further."

 

The New York Post reported in February the death of another Google employee which police said was by apparent suicide in an apartment located not far from Google's offices. The family organized a GoGundMe page in his honor 

According to the US Bureau of Statistics, there were 307 workplace-related deaths by suicide in 2019, the highest level on record. 

Amid layoffs sweeping the tech industry in recent months, Google employees were also impacted. 

 

Google parent Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced on January 20 the company was laying off 6% of its workforce – 12,000 workers.

 

Hundreds of the impacted workers took to social media such as LinkedIn to express their feelings. Many shared their dismay for the way the layoffs had been conducted.

Google employee Jacob Pratt, 33, found dead of apparent suicide in NYC apartment

 

Jacob Pratt, a 33-year-old Google employee who worked out of the search giant’s New York City offices, was found dead of an apparent suicide earlier this month, The Post has learned.

 

An NYPD spokesperson confirmed Pratt’s death on Monday, saying he appeared to have hanged himself in an apartment located in the trendy Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, not far from Google’s corporate offices.

 

The Post has reached out to the city medical examiner’s office.

 

Officers responded to a 911 call to a residence at the corner of West 26th Street and 6th Avenue in Manhattan just before 6 p.m. Feb. 16.

 

“Upon arrival, officers observed a 33-year-old male unconscious and unresponsive,” the NYPD told The Post.

 

Paramedics arrived and pronounced Pratt dead on the scene. Investigators said there were no signs of foul play.

“The New York City Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and the investigation remains ongoing,” according to the NYPD.

 

The Post has sought comment from Google.

Jacob Pratt, 33, was found dead in a Manhattan apartment on Feb. 16, according to the NYPD.

According to his LinkedIn page, Pratt was a “partnership lead” at Google, while an obituary said he was an “accounting manager” at Google, where he spent nearly four years.

Pratt, who lived in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, “unexpectedly passed away” on Feb. 16, according to an obit published by the Lansing State Journal.

The 33-year-old was a graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago, according to the obituary.

“His interests in advertising and technology led him to a dream job as an accounting manager at Google in Manhattan,” the obituary read.

 

“Those who knew Jacob were often a part of spirited debates about all manner of things and a humor that was contagious.”

 

Pratt’s sister, Jenna Pratt, organized a GoFundMe crowdfunding page where donors can make a charitable contribution in her late brother’s name.

 

“He touched the lives of everyone he interacted with whether through his school, work, or personal journey,” the Pratt family wrote.

 

The Pratts asked GoFundMe donors to give to the Maka-A-Wish Michigan foundation as well as the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

 

“These two charities represent our son and brother and the heart he had for the people around him,” the family wrote.

Pratt’s mother, Shawn, posted a selfie photo of her and her son last Wednesday — six days after Jacob’s passing.

The Post has sought comment from the Pratt family.

Pratt worked in various jobs in the tech industry after graduating from Lansing Community College and Northwestern.

The family plans to host a celebration of his life at 11 a.m. local time Tuesday at Riverview Church’s REO Town Venue in Lansing, according to his obituary.
